GLP-1 has become a common term since the introduction of GLP-1 agonist drugs like semaglutide injections. GLP-1, or glucagon-like peptide-1, is a hormone that the body naturally produces. This hormone is released in response to eating and it acts to utilize glucose for energy.
GLP-1 agonist drugs reduce blood sugar by stimulating insulin production and suppressing glucagon. The popularity of GLP-1 agonists is due to their ability to accelerate weight loss by reducing appetite and increasing satiety. This makes them a common prescription for people with Type 2 Diabetes and Obesity.
“The satiety effect of GLP1-agonists reduces your food intake, appetite and hunger. These combined effects often result in weight loss.”
However, the GLP-1 drug class is relatively new and comes with the risk of side effects. According to Harvard, the most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation. Severe side effects include pancreatitis, gastroparesis, bowel obstruction, gallstones, and bile duct blockages. Many people often experience rebound weight gain after discontinuing GLP-1 agonists. Additionally, due to the novelty of this drug class, long term effects have not been studied.
The GLP-1 hormone is naturally produced in the body in response to consuming nutrient dense foods. The standard American diet contains copious amounts of ultra-processed foods, which are nutrient depleted. This is why many people eat high calorie meals but never feel satisfied. It’s not the amount that you eat, but what you are eating that is impacting your satiety and keeping your weight up.
Good news! Organic whole foods have the highest nutrient density and are also anti-inflammatory. Eating a balanced whole food diet rich in lean proteins, fiber, and healthy fats increases natural GLP-1 and has the same effect as GLP-1 agonist drugs without any of the risks. Whole foods naturally regulate blood sugar due to their high fiber content and balanced nutritional profiles. Due to their GLP-1 stimulating effect, whole foods increase satiety. A whole food diet can also prevent rebound weight gain after discontinuing GLP-1 agonist prescriptions.
