Clean Space, Clear Mind: The Hidden Health Impact of Your Environment

Maybe Mom was right when she said “clean your room.” Our environment directly impacts our health. From organization and cleanliness, to toxin exposure and air quality, the spaces in which we live and work can change the way we feel physically and mentally.

Have you ever walked into a messy house after a stressful day at work and felt your stress level creep up a bit higher? This wasn’t just in your head. A cluttered space has been linked to increased stress, reduced focus, confusion, tension, and irritability. Maintaining an organized space can foster a sense of control, contribute to calmness, and lower anxiety and depression (Gordon, 2025). The familiarity of an orderly space triggers these positive effects (Silva, 2013). Cleanliness can also reduce fatigue, since a clean bed has been linked to better sleep (Gordon, 2025). The simple act of cleaning releases endorphins and supports healthy emotional regulation (Silva, 2013).

Minimalism, or simple living, is organization taken to the next step. Minimalism eliminates unnecessary items and focuses on functionality. This lifestyle has been shown to lower stress and anxiety, improve focus, boost productivity, and increase happiness and satisfaction. Minimalism has also been linked to a greater sense of wellbeing, improved sleep, and better health. Other effects of fewer possessions are financial savings, time savings, and reduced environmental impact (Penner, 2025).

Organization and cleanliness also reduces the likelihood of mold by reducing dust. Molds feed on dust, which often accumulates in untidy areas. Mold produces mycotoxins, which are very harmful to health. Mycotoxins have been associated with Alzheimer’s, autism, bronchitis, cancer, infertility, chronic fatigue, IBS, MS, Parkinson’s, asthma, and intestinal permeability. Symptoms are wide ranging and include anxiety, depression, allergy-like symptoms, cognitive impairments, headaches, sore throat, and breathing difficulties (Mosaic Diagnostics, 2023). If you think you may have mold toxicity, contact Renewed Hope Nutrition at 828-738-1060 to order a mycotoxin test and schedule an appointment to begin a detoxification protocol for your specific mycotoxin type.

Disorderly areas can also increase the chance of infestations. Disorganized items provide hiding places for pests and uncleanliness can attract them. Roaches, ants, and rodents are all attracted by dirty spaces (Watkins, 2023). These pests can transmit diseases and reduce air quality, leading to worsened health for the building’s occupants.

Air is most important to health, since we can only live for a few minutes without it. Though poor air quality rarely leads to immediate consequences, ensuring that the air in your home and workplace is unpolluted can help support long term wellness. In our homes, we should avoid synthetic fragrances, open the windows when possible, use air purifiers when the windows are closed, and install HEPA filters in our HVAC systems. Workplace air quality can be improved through proper protective equipment when working with chemicals, using an air purifier while working in an office, and avoiding the use of synthetically scented products. A simple rule of thumb is that clean air does not smell like anything.

Furniture, carpeting, paint, new construction, and many other products can all worsen air quality. New materials and decaying old materials release chemicals like bromide and formaldehyde into the air. Fragranced candles, perfumes, and room sprays contain synthetic chemicals and propellants. Air purifiers can reduce the levels of these chemicals, but the only way to truly avoid these toxins is to choose non-toxic items that have been third party tested and have the lowest chemical levels.

Personal care products and laundry detergents can contaminate the air we breathe no matter where we are. Artificial fragrances in perfumes, hair products, skin products, deodorants, detergents, fabric softeners, dryer sheets, and countless other products follow us everywhere we go. Choosing non-toxic naturally scented or unscented personal care and hygiene products reduces our exposure to environmental toxins and can improve long term health.
