Grounding, also known as earthing, is when you allow your body to be electrically connected with the earth, either directly or through a grounding device. The theory behind grounding is that the electrons from the earth will transfer to the body and provide antioxidant effects by neutralizing free radicals. This effect could improve health in a number of ways.
The benefits of grounding best supported by research include improved sleep, less pain after exercising, reduced chronic pain, better mood, increased energy, and less fatigue. Earthing may also improve immune function, reduce inflammation, speed up healing, and support cardiovascular health, but these benefits have not been fully substantiated by scientific studies. These effects could occur as a result of the antioxidant activity of the electrons absorbed during grounding.
The most natural, and probably the most effective, methods for grounding involve engaging with nature. Walking barefoot, making skin contact with the earth, and swimming in natural bodies of water are some of the easiest ways to ground yourself. Technology has also created ways to engage in earthing. You could purchase grounding mats, sheets, mattresses, socks, shoes, wrist bands, or patches., However, traditional grounding by going outside also offers other benefits, like vitamin D activation from sunlight, stress reduction, and improved mental performance.
Grounding is a great reason to get outside and connect with nature. Its potential antioxidant benefits could help support you during your health journey. Antioxidants should also be sourced from a nutrient dense whole food diet. Similarly, it’s important to avoid foods and activities that increase oxidative stress and create free radicals.
