Every time you go somewhere, you are bound to see someone with dyed hair. Almost 80% of the world’s population uses hair dye. Using hair dyes could increase your risk for health complications, but there are ways to avoid the harsh chemicals in traditional hair dye.
Several studies have been conducted to assess the impact of hair dyes on cancer risk. While many of these studies have conflicting results, it is still best to avoid hair dye exposure until a definite conclusion is reached. Even though hair dyes have not been proven to cause cancer, there is still a probable link between increased risks for certain cancers and hair dye exposure.
“Compared to non-hair dye users, participants who had ever used permanent hair dyes did not have an overall higher risk for cancer or cancer-related deaths. Among specific cancers, there was slightly higher risk for basal cell carcinoma (the most common type of skin cancer) in ever-users compared to non-users. Risk for certain breast cancers and ovarian cancers seemed to increase with longer-term use of permanent dye. Women with naturally dark hair seemed to have increased risk for Hodgkin lymphoma, and women with naturally light hair were observed to have higher risk for basal cell carcinoma.”
Outside of potential carcinogenicity, hair dye contains harsh chemicals that can cause other health effects. Many chemicals in hair dye are skin irritants and skin sensitizers, meaning that repeated exposure increases the likelihood of skin irritation. Conducting a skin patch test before each application of hair dye can prevent skin irritation. Chemicals in hair dyes are often endocrine disruptors, meaning that they interfere with hormonal balance. Many hair dye ingredients are also harmful to the environment.
There are several natural alternatives to traditional hair dyes. Vegetable juices, teas, henna, herbs, and coffee can be used to naturally change hair color without the negative effects of chemical exposure. If you are looking for something a little more like traditional dye, consult a reliable source, such as EWG’s Skin Deep database, to find a cleaner product.
