Fluoride Exposure: A Hidden Threat to Your Health?

Fluoride is found in most dental care products, prescription medications, and the water supplies of millions of people. The primary dangers of fluoride are brain and CNS damage, lowered IQ, moderate carcinogenicity, increased risk of bone fractures, hypothyroidism risk, interference with sexual development, and increased risk of diabetes development.

Calcium fluoride occurs naturally in the soil and water and is not well absorbed by the body. However, the form of fluoride added to many products and water supplies is far more insidious.

“[I]n 90 percent of our fluoridated water, [is] a compound known as hydrofluorosilicic acid (HFS or FSA). HFS is a by-product of the process used to create phosphate fertilizers that used to be considered toxic waste and is now (more than likely) an additive in your family’s water.”

HFS contains arsenic, which is a toxic heavy metal. “Fluoridated water using HSF contains 100 times more arsenic than fluoridated water using sodium fluoride at 0.7 ppm.”  When HFS comes in contact with plumbing, it increases the amount of lead that is leached into the water. Both arsenic and lead are carcinogenic and can have detrimental health impacts.

All forms of fluoride have the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier and can pass through the placenta into the fetus. Only 50% of fluoride that enters the body is excreted, the other half accumulates in the bones, teeth, and pineal gland. The pineal gland is responsible for regulating hormones that set the circadian rhythm. Many enzymes necessary for metabolic functions are also inhibited by fluoride.

Fluoride is often touted as being beneficial for dental health. Fluoride does support tooth mineralization and thereby prevent cavities, but it can cause dental fluorosis. Dental fluorosis is the appearance of tooth discoloration and is irreversible in adults. Skeletal fluorosis, a much less common form of this disease, is a crippling condition.

“Countries widely using fluoridated water in public systems have seen a decline in cavities, yes, but that trend is almost identically matched in similar countries that have never practiced public water fluoridation.”

Fluoride is found in city water, dental care products, teflon pans, pesticides, some foods, and some medications. Reducing fluoride exposure is possible, even if you drink from a fluoridated water supply. Home water filters can be used to remove fluoride from water. Switching to hydroxyapatite toothpaste will prevent cavities without the negative effects of fluoride. Choosing non-toxic cookware will reduce your fluoride and PFAS exposure. Eat organic whole foods to reduce your pesticide intake. Ask your doctor if your medications are fluoride derived and inquire about fluoride-free alternatives.

Detoxifying fluoride from the body can be done through hydration with non-fluoridated water, consuming foods rich in iodine, calcium, and magnesium, sweating regularly, and supporting your natural detoxification pathways. Iodine rich foods include seaweed, fish, dairy, eggs, beef liver, and chicken. Foods high in calcium include dairy products, winter squash varieties, almonds, fish, and leafy greens. Magnesium is found in almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, beans, spinach, swiss chard, white potatoes, brown rice, oatmeal, meat, bananas, and raisins. Breaking a sweat regularly, either from exercise or sauna sessions, helps release toxins from the body. Supporting the liver and digestive system allows your body to detoxify naturally.
